Responsibilities
The Community Development Department is responsible for administering a number of Kodiak Island Borough Code Sections.

The department works with other Borough departments, assisting them in their administration of Title 8 Health and Safety; Title 13 Utilities; Title 15 Buildings and Construction, and Title 18 Borough Real Property (Process permits and leases to use Borough land).
Staff Assistance
The department provides staff assistance to the Planning and Zoning Commission, Parks and Recreation Committee, the Kodiak Area Transit System (KATS) Advisory Committee, the Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC), and a number of other ad-hoc and permanent Borough advisory committees.
The Community Development Department is also responsible for a wide range of functions.
These include:
- Junk/Abandoned Vehicles
- Coastal Management plan reviews
- Comprehensive Planning
- Contract Management (building inspections, junk removal and animal control)
- Emergency preparedness planning (LEPC)
- Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping and drafting services/E-911 addressing
- Land Use Planning (e.g. staff to the Planning and Zoning commission, area plan preparation, permitting and enforcement)
- Research and information services (e.g. population determinations, economic and social data)
- Wood cutting permits
