Kodiak Island Borough
Situated in the Gulf of Alaska, the Kodiak Island Borough is located in the Kodiak Island Archipelago, an area comprised of sixteen major islands paralleling the Katmai Coast along the Alaska Peninsula for 177 miles. At 3,588 square miles, Kodiak Island is the second largest island in the United States, second only to the island of Hawaii. The city of Kodiak is 250 air miles southwest of Anchorage and is the seventh largest city in the state. Total island wide population including the six villages of Port Lions, Ouzinkie, Larsen Bay, Karluk, Old Harbor and Akhiok is 13,466 with 11,000 of those residents living in and around the city of Kodiak and its road system.

Kodiak is the transportation hub for southwest Alaska. Kodiak’s fishing port is the largest in the state and ranks third in the country. Additionally, Kodiak is home of the largest US Coast Guard base in the country and the first privately owned rocket launch facility. Commercial fishing, the U.S. Coast Guard and other government entities are the dominant industries followed by retail trade, transportation, utilities and tourism. In and near the city of Kodiak there are four elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. The Kodiak Island Borough School District also includes schools in seven of its outlying communities.
Kodiak offers an endless supply of culture and history, abundant wildlife and scenic beauty, and is home to 3,000 of our most famous residents — the Kodiak brown bear.
