Responsibilities
The Kodiak Island Borough provides solid waste management for the road system of Kodiak, which includes collection, disposal and recycling.
Solid waste accepted for disposal includes municipal solid waste, construction/demolition debris, asbestos, and sludge. Used oil and scrap metal are also accepted; used oil is re-used in the baler building for heating purposes and the scrap metal is shipped off island to be recycled.
Residential household hazardous waste may be brought to the baler facility throughout the year.
The Engineering/Facilities Department is responsible for the administration, operation, and maintenance of the baler facility and landfill area. The landfill is operated in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and guidelines.
The revenue collected by this enterprise fund are divided into two categories: collection and disposal fees. In estimating revenues, the waste generated by the residential and commercial population of the greater Kodiak area is considered.

Landfill Capacity
Our current landfill “footprint” will reach
capacity in 2014, after that time a new
lined lateral expansion is being proposed.
This new expansion is projected to reach capacity in 2022 - 2024.

Each Kodiak resident generates about 5 pounds of solid waste per day which is 12 percent higher than the national average. Yet, the community recycles only 6 percent of this waste. The Borough encourages residents to recycle, in an effort to extend the life of the landfill.
