Kodiak Island Borough Landfill

The Engineering and Facilities Department is responsible for the administration, operation, and maintenance of the baler facility and landfill area. The landfill is operated in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and guidelines.

Landfill operations are supported wholly by disposal fees. The Borough is moving toward a Pay as You Throw system so that each user pays proportionally based on the amount of waste disposed at the landfill. Currently, most fees are assessed via garbage collection services so residents can bring many household items to the landfill for free, however there are also some fees charged at the landfill.

Disposal Service Fees

Some disposal services are charged a fee, among them are:
  • Commercial garbage
  • Metals
  • Residential and commercial construction and remodeling materials including lumber and fixtures (sinks, cabinets, etc.)
  • Vehicles
Please see the Solid Waste section of our fee schedule for fee amounts.

Accepted Residential Garbage

The landfill accepts the following residential garbage, up to 500 lbs, at no charge:
  • Appliances
  • Car battery
  • Furniture
  • Household hazardous waste (paint, solvents, household chemicals, etc), up to 40 lbs*
  • Household trash
  • Tires, without rims, up to eight per month
  • Used oil, up to five gallons per month

*The Borough also hosts an annual Community Cleanup for household hazardous waste disposal.
